The Yeomen of the Guard was premiered on 3 October 1888 in the Savoy Theatre, London. It ran for 423 performances. Gilbert's inspiration came from a poster depicting the Tower of London. Sullivan was delighted with the libretto, and pleased that the "topsy-turveydom" had given way to humour and humanity.

This straightforward comic story was unlike anything Gilbert had previously written, and no British institution was held up to ridicule. It was the first G&S opera (but not the first by Sullivan) to be performed at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
