Maud

The main plot of this splendid narrative poem is about a group of high minded and determined ladies who are determined to educate themselves in their own college (an unusual but slowly arriving procedure in those days); and to show the male of the species that they can do as well, if not better than them in the arts and sciences. Things have certainly altered since those restricted days! Scholars debate . . .!

A twist in the story comes when three intrepid males steal into their world (disguised as females) determined to woo three of the fair maidens. And the frailties of human nature steered the rest . . .!

Amid this convoluted scenario there are several beautiful lyrical poems. Here is one of the best known of them:

Sweet and Low

Sweet and Low, sweet and low,
Wind of the western sea,
Low, low, breathe and blow,
Wind of the western sea!
Over the rolling waters go
Come from the dying moon, and blow,
Blow him again to me:
While my little one, while my pretty one, sleeps.

Sleep and rest, Sleep and rest,
Father will come to thee soon;
Rest, rest, on on mother's breast,
Father will come to thee soon;
Father will come to his babe in the nest,
Silver sails all out of the west
Under the silver moon:
Sleep, my little one, sleep, my pretty one, sleep.

Like to visit Maud now . . .?

Another, is The Swallow, set to music by Sir Arthur Sullivan.
