The Mikado was premiered in the Savoy Theatre on 15 March 1885. It ran for 672 performances, the longest run of any G&S piece. Written at a time when London welcomed everything even remotely connected with Japan as being enveloped in an aura of romance, the setting had immediate popular appeal. The musical score of the Mikado is thoroughly English. Nevertheless, the crisp, uproarious satire of its libretto is internationally dateless. It continues to be the pair's most successful work and has been translated into many languages. Footnote: The Music on this page background is an arrangement of Miya Sama (the Mikado's entrance) from The Mikado.
Now let's join Ko-Ko and sing: Tit-Willow
