| Alfred, first Baron Tennyson was born the son of a parson in Somersby in the Lincolnshire Wolds in1809. His two brothers (Frederick and Charles Turner Tennyson) were also men of letters and published poems and other works in their own right, and with Alfred - Poems by Two Brothers. Tennyson was appointed Poet Laureate in succession to William Wordsworth, and was created a peer in 1884. He was famous in his lifetime for both lyrical and narrative epic poetry. Some of his most famous pieces include In Memoriam, which expressed his grief for his lost friend of Trinity College, Cambridge days, A H Hallam. Other famous works include Maude, also The Charge of the Light Brigade, Morte d'Arthur, The Princess, and The Brook, which can still be seen gurgling in and around his childhood village. He moved to Farringford on the Isle of Wight in 1854. Alfred inspired poets, writers and composers during his lifetime, and was a tremendous influence on both Arthur Sullivan and William Gilbert.
