Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born in Votkinsk, Russia, in 1840, and died in St Petersburg in 1893. In his 53 years he became a world famous composer and conductor. Pyotr (Peter) studied law before studying composition with Anton Rubinstein at the St Petersburg Conservatoire. He then went to Moscow as Professor of Harmony at the new Conservatoire, under the directorship of Anton's brother, Nikolay Rubinstein. Peter had a tempestuous private life. His marriage to one of his students was a disaster for a man of homosexual tendencies. It lasted nine weeks only, and brought him to a state of mental collapse. His musical life was ambitious and fruitful. He has produced some wonderful music, which influenced the musical and theatrical world. A contemporary of Arthur Sullivan, he had a profound effect on his compositions. Peter visited England several times. On one occasion he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Music from Cambridge University - along with Italian composer and librettist to Verdi and others, Arrigo Boito; the German composer Max Bruch; the Frenchman Camille Saint-Saëns; (and Norwegian Edvard Grieg in absentia). A living acknowledgement that music knows no national boundaries. Among his many and varied compositions it is difficult to choose what to include (or really, what to exclude) here. You might like to follow up others at your leisure. May we suggest you try for starters:
You see what I mean! One could go on and on, and on ... But here are one or two we have arranged to get the feel of his music.
