This beautiful swirling waltz from Act I of Florodora was sung and danced by Dolores (premiered by soprano, Miss Evie Greene), revealing her un-containable ecstasy at being in love with Frank. Starting just off stage, she sings and dances on and around the stage. Needless to say it was a big encore winner (and doubtless required a lot of energy).

The published dynamics in the score are economical, which leaves a good margin for creativity by musical director, producer and singer. The pensive change of key from A flat major to G sharp minor (same key, but in the minor!) at bar 90 reflects Dolores' natural hesitation and doubts, these are quickly overcome at bar 114 with an optimistic return to the A flat major key. But enough of the technicalities - on with the song (and the dance) . . .

The Silver Star of Love
(Intro commencing quietly - Off-stage Solo at bar 18)

Quietly off-stage: Bright silver star of love . . .
That shines for me,
Bright silver star of love . . .
In the time of our eventide . .
When the heart is a-weary and sad,
'Tis the time a maiden longs,
'Tis the time a maiden longs,
She longs for the silver star of love.
(8 bar Interlude - Entrance of Dolores)

When love's star shines above me,
When the calm of the night falls around . . .
'Tis the time . .
When my heart tells of one who may love me,
When love's eyes gaze upon me;
Then the brightness of heav'n is above . .,
For this love . . .
Is the one silver star that may be guide me.

What . . need I care for the dreams . .
Of a fair Eldorado?1
When need I look for the day
When love . . grows old . .
Shine . . fairest jewel!
Fairest jewel of the heavens . .

You are light of my soul!
You are fairest, dearest of all to me.
Ah! . .'tis the silver star of love
That is shining above for me.
'Tis the brightest of all that eyes can see;
'Tis the beacon of lovers' ecstasy;
When the heart is a weary one,
And sighing alone in the eventide,
'Tis then the time a maiden longs
For the light of the bright silver star of love . .

'Tis the bright silver star of love . .
That shines for me.
 Bright silver star of love . .
In the time of our eventide . .
When the heart is a-weary and sad,
'Tis the time a maiden longs,
'Tis the time a maiden longs,
She longs for the silver star of love.
She longs for the star of love.
She sighs in the eventide,
She longs for the bright,
Bright silver star of love . .
Of love . . of love . .,
She sighs for her star of love,
She longs for the bright star of love . .,
'Tis the light of her soul,
'Tis the bright silver star of love . .,
Of love . . . . .

Perhaps this points us to The Fellow Who Might . . .

1.    Footnote: Eldorado (or El Dorado) is described in our MusicSmiles dictionary as: the golden land (or city) imagined by the Spanish conquerors of America. In modern terms it is a description of any place where wealth is easily made. Return to Story.
