This was also a time when interest was being paid to our electoral system. The hard fought right to choose who represents us in nearly all that we do and say, was firmly in the Victorian's mind. Gilbert (with the aid of Sullivan) also showed a special interest in this field of study! The Sentry's Song comes from Iolanthe, and is Gilbert's acerbic way of identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the political system. It all happened when the sentry, in the solitude of his duty, started giving it serious thought! Here now is our arrangement of Gilbert & Sullivan's witty skit on the system.
