Ruddigore was premiered on 22 January 1887 in the Savoy Theatre, London. It ran for 283 performances. It was written at the time when Sullivan was pouring all his inspiration into a setting for Longfellow's 'The Golden Legend'. Ruddigore's music was always tuneful but seemed to lack the delicate appeal of more popular Savoy operas. The subject caricatured by Gilbert was the English stage, with all its conventions, which Gilbert loved and cherished. Here again he found a place for the fantastic and impossible.
