This
famous aria is from Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah (Elias). It became a
favourite Victorian Drawing room ballad in its own right. Its peaceful rhythms
and melodies are briefly interrupted at the thought of 'evil-doers' but it
returns to tranquillity for a surprise retard in strict time! The text was
selected from the Bible by Julius Schrubring. Students of Theology: to your
Bibles and tell us where the text came from! (Try the book of Kings 17 -
onward, for the story of Elijah. It's a good one).
O Rest
in the Lord
O rest
in the Lord,
Wait patiently for Him,
And He shall give thee
Thy heart's desires;
O rest in the Lord,
Wait patiently for Him,
And He shall give thee thy heart's desires,
And He shall give thee thy heart's desires.
Commit thy way unto Him,
And trust in Him;
Commit thy way unto Him,
And trust in Him;
And fret not thyself,
Because of evil doers.
O rest in the Lord,
Wait patiently for Him,
Wait patiently for Him,
O rest in the Lord,
Wait patiently for Him,
And He shall give thee
Thy heart's desires;
And He shall give thee
Thy heart's desires;
And He shall give thee
Thy heart's desires;
O rest in the Lord,
O rest in the Lord,
And wait, wait patiently for Him.
