The Worlds of Gilbert and Sullivan

Remember!

Up

Christina Georgina Rossetti, was the famous sister of two equally famous brothers: Dante Gabriel - the artist, and William Michael - editor and art critic.

Christina was born in 1830, and died in 1894. She wrote many fine poems, and her technical virtuosity was much respected. Often her verse bordered on the melancholy, verging at times on the morbid. This well known poem is often used to this day on big tragic occasions. It is also used at small family occasions, so is universally appealing.

Remember!

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you planned:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.

Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

A sad poem isn't it? But perhaps some sage advice from a thoughtful Victorian woman!
