This
famous and majestic hymn was composed by John Goss (tune: Praise My Soul), the
words were written by that other famous hymn writer the Revd. Henry Fromer Lyte
- who also wrote Abide With Me (see our MusicSmiles Contents), and God
of Mercy, God of Grace.
It
is unusual in that John wrote four different settings for the four verses. Each
of these has a beauty of its own. The music matches the words in power and
serenity. The first is the full choir in unison with organ accompaniment. Second
is unaccompanied choir in four-part harmony. Third the trebles (or ladies) get
their turn with a light accompaniment. And fourth the whole choir is in unison
with a big organ accompaniment.
The
imagery, we are sure, will inspire our poets and artists to 'have a go' - look
forward to hearing from you!
Hope you like our
arrangement, please feel free to sing
along with Sir John, and Revd Henry . . .
Praise
My Soul . . .
Praise
my soul the King of heaven;
To his feet thy tribute bring.
Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,
Who like me his praise should sing?
Praise him! Praise him!
Praise him! Praise him!
Praise the everlasting King!
Praise
him for his grace and favour
To our fathers in distress;
Praise him still the same for ever,
Slow to chide, and swift to bless.
Praise him! Praise him!
Praise him! Praise him!
Glorious in his faithfulness.
Father-like
he tends and spares us;
Well our feeble frame he knows;
In his hands he gently bears us,
Rescues us from all our foes.
Praise him! Praise him!
Praise him! Praise him!
Widely as his mercy flows.
Angels,
help us to adore him;
Ye behold him face to face;
Sun and moon bow down before him,
Dwellers all in time and space.
Praise him! Praise him!
Praise him! Praise him!
Praise with us the God of grace!
