The Peer Gynt Suite started life as incidental music for Ibsen's play Peer Gynt, which had its first performance in February 1876. The play and indeed the music was an immediate and tremendous success, making Ibsen and Grieg national (indeed international) figures. Henrik Ibsen (1828 - 1906) was a Norwegian dramatist, famed as the founder of modern prose drama. His great dramas are now stock-in-trade in the English standard repertoire. Peer Gynt is a sort of street-wise 'Everyman' (the very popular morality play). Peer's world-wide travels take him through most of the temptations and traps of human existence. The play is a powerful reminder of human frailties and strengths. Together with Edvard's magnificent music, it runs somewhat like an opera. Peer Gynt - Incidental Music to Ibsen's Play
Included in this suite are individual pieces now famous in their own right. These include: the beautiful Morning, the rumbustious Hall of the Mountain King, the playful Anitra's Dance, and the heart-rending Solveig's Song.
Shall we start with Edvard's Morning . . .?
