| This lovely duet starts with a kiss. Micaela delivers this kiss from his mother to Don José the soldier on duty away from home. The kiss, of course, is equally intended from herself, and Don José is in raptures as he realises this and is anxious to return her love. We have arranged the piece in two parts - one in French, then a short 'disturbing' interval, and the second in an English translation. The joining bit in between is recitative set against the developing music in the Vocal Score. We have abbreviated this to exclude all but the ominous jarring chords of the Carmen threat. This little motif will later build and become more dramatic as the opera progresses. However, heads down, have a crack at the French and follow it with the English. OR, simply settle back and listen to Georges' Magnificent score. My
