Promise of Merry Sunshine . . . Whilst in Germany Arthur made many friends, including fellow student, Edvard Grieg. He studied the modern music of Felix Mendelssohn, Richard Wagner, and of Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann. In August 1860 a great storm inspired him to write music to Shakespeare’s play ‘The Tempest’, which shot him to overnight fame. Inspired and encouraged by his new-found heroes, including Franz Liszt – who also introduced him to the art of gambling – Arthur’s future as a composer (and gambler!) was assured.
