Jig

Where would an Irish show (or rather a show set in Ireland) be without a jig? This is a beauty. It is occasionally tinged with wistfulness and has a style which definitely encourages the feet to tap!

The Jig (Gigue in French, Giga in Italian) was a lively Italian dance dating back to the middle ages. It was often used by great composers like Handel and Bach in serious works as a last movement to end a piece. Later it was taken up as a country dance by English, Scottish and Irish folk. The Irish firmly took the dance to their hearts stamping it with their own particular brand of rhythmic genius and now it belongs firmly in the Irish tradition.

This Jig in The Emerald Isle is the 18th item and based in the second half of the show. It also includes a chorus, can you hear it in the music?

Ah! . . .ah! . . .ah! . . .
In St Patrick was a broth of a boy!
For St Patrick was a broth of a boy . .!
For St Patrick was a broth. . of . . a boy! . . .

Hope you like our MusicSmiles arrangement of Arthur's (and Edward's) superb, energetic and melodic musical gem. Go on, join in and enjoy the fun . . .

Would you like to return to The Emerald Isle . . .?
