Iolanthe was premiered on 25 November 1882 in the Savoy Theatre, London. It ran for 398 performances. This highly popular 'Fairy Opera' pokes friendly fun at a staid all-male House of Lords, whilst soaring away on flights of fancy with a nearly-all-female band of fairies. Comparisons have been drawn between the character similarities of the Fairy Queen and The Chancellor. Footnote: The Music on this page background is an instrumental arrangement of snippets from 'The Peers' Chorus' and the Invocation of Iolanthe from dark exile, from Iolanthe.
