Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry was born in Bournemouth in 1848, and died in Rustington Sussex in 1918. He also had strong family connections in Gloucester. He studied at Oxford University, and was a co-founder of the Music Club with Sterndale Bennett and Macfarren. He started in Business but later changed to music for a career.

He studied piano with E Dannrreuther. His choral work established him with Stanford as a front-runner in British composition. He joined the staff of the Royal College of Music in 1883, becoming Director in 1894. He was also Professor of Music at Oxford University from 1900 till 1908. He was knighted for his contribution to music in 1898, and created a baronet in 1903.

Hubert made a considerable contribution to English music in nearly every genre, at a time of German dominance of the art. He supported the slightly older Sir Arthur Sullivan and willed him to succeed in the great music festivals of the time. However, he reluctantly acknowledged that Arthur's genius lay in his collaborations with W S Gilbert, rather than in his serious works.

Among Hubert's many superb compositions is his special anthem I Was Glad.
