Holy, Holy, Holy
Serenade

This marvellously simple piece is the Sanctus from the German Mass II (Deutsche Messe,1826-27, D872), by Franz Schubert. It is translated from the German by Christina Cumming Cairns.

When I was looking for a Schubert piece for the 'Minims' (A small sub-choir) and Singers in our second G&S performance, the choir leader (Bella) suggested this one. We rehearsed it once, and sang it in the dressing room (The Bishop's Chapel in Cathedral Village!) as a warm-up before going in to the concert in The Great Hall. It sounded wonderful in that superb acoustic. Then both choir and audience loved it - and we retained for further performances. Hope you like it too.

Please feel free to sing along and enjoy it with us . . .

Holy, Holy, Holy

Holy, Holy, Holy,
God Almighty Lord!
Holy, Holy, Holy,
Ev'ry-where adored!
He without beginning,
He th'eternal one
Reigns and rules forever
All things 'neath the sun.

Holy, Holy, Holy,
God Almighty Lord!
Holy, Holy, Holy,
Ev'ry-where adored!
Power and love and wonder
Circling round His throne,
Praise Him, Holy, Holy,
Lord of life alone.
