Gabriel Urbain Fauré was born in Pamiers, in the foothills of the Pyrenees in Southern France, near to the Spanish border, in 1845. A composer and organist, he studied under Niedermeyer and Saint-Saëns, at the École Niedermeyer, Paris.

He became organist at St Sulpice, Paris, St Honoré; and choirmaster and organist at the Madeleine. He was Professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire, and its Director from 1905 to 1920.His illustrious pupils included Ravel, Boulanger, Enesco, Schmitt, Koechlin, and Roger-Ducasse.

Although Fauré is now recognised as a brilliant composer, his fame was slow to catch on. His delicate and elegant style was pioneering in its approach to harmony and invention, well ahead of his time. As such he was an inspiration to his students and others who admired his work. There is little doubt his influence was felt by Arthur Sullivan and other British composers.

Gabriel died in Paris in 1924. He was a prolific composer and among his great pieces, perhaps his best known is his Requiem. Equally loved is his Pavane. Click to discover more . . .
