Edward studied at the Royal Academy, and went on to play in theatre orchestras. He quickly established himself as a conductor, and became Musical Director of the Globe Theatre in London. Like so many other composers he began writing incidental music for Shakespeare's plays. The plays included: Richard III, Henry VIII, and Romeo & Juliet. These together with the play Nell Gwynn raised the general level of theatre music, and made him famous.
He completed Sir Arthur Sullivan's last (unfinished) opera - The Emerald Isle. He also composed that eternally famous song (which we've used in our Francis Drake story - Glorious Devon . . .
Described as 'the new Sullivan', his greatest success was his patriotic operetta Merrie England. |
