Wiegenlied,
(or Geistliches Wiegenlied Opus 91 Number2 as catalogued in my music dictionary) means Cradle Song (Lullaby).
It was one of about 200 songs written by Johannes Brahms,
mainly based on German folk songs. The title implies that it was no ordinary
child, and no ordinary mother that he (and librettist Geibel) had in mind
(experts please comment). The
portraits of Virgin and Child all over Europe at the time had obviously inspired
the songwriters. But no mother and child is ever ordinary, all are special in
somebody's eyes! Whatever the inspiration it became a miniature masterpiece.
This
beautiful song is so well known, however, it really needs no introduction. Our
'orchestral' arrangement is intended to reflect the sophistication with which
Brahms usually polished and refined the simple German folk songs in order to
achieve his remarkable results.
Hope
you will follow your urge to hum along with Johannes,
or use your art in any other way the music (or the imagery) inspires . . .
