Onward Christian Soldiers was written one Saturday afternoon whilst staying with friends. Their children practised it, and sang verse 3 in chapel next day. So this famous hymn started its public life with little children singing – ‘Like a mighty army moves the church of God'! This
stirring hymn (tune St Gertrude), (Words by S Baring Gould 1834-1924) became immediately
popular with choirs and congregations, and remains a universal favourite. Onward,
Christian soldiers, Marching as to war, At
the sign of triumph Satan's legions flee; Like
a mighty army Moves the Church of God; Crowns
and thrones may perish, Kingdoms rise and wane, Onward
then, ye people, Join our happy throng,
Shall we go back with Arthur to Sullivan Hymns . . .?
