Anton Grigorevich Rubinstein was the elder of two brothers who were Russian pianists and composers. Anton, born in Vekhvatisnets in 1829 was taught by his mother, then by Villoing. At 10 this brilliant pianist played his debut concert in Moscow, and at 11 was playing on a European tour.

He studied composition in Berlin when 15, then toured his native land and Germany with many of his own compositions. One of the greatest pianists of the day and a prolific composer, he toured the United States of America and then England many times. He later founded the St Petersburg Conservatoire which he directed from 1862 until 1867, and later from 1887-90. He died in 1894.

Anton's brother, Nikolay Grigorevich Rubinstein, 6 years younger, also studied in Berlin. He later founded the Moscow Conservatoire and remained its Director until his death in Paris in 1881.

Both these brothers had a significant influence on Western music through their compositions, their magnificent piano performances, and through their teaching.

Melody in F, featured here, is Anton's most famous composition. Here is our MusicSmiles instrumental arrangement of the world favourite work.

Hope you will feel free to join Anton and hum along with him . . .

Remember it from early piano exam days?  Like to hear it again?
