Academic Overture

Johannes Brahms Academic Festival Overture Opus 80, was composed in acknowledgement of an honorary PhD conferred on him by Breslau University in 1881.

This fantasia type of concert overture included four German student songs:

bulletWir hatten gebauet ein stattliches Haus
bulletWe have built a stately house.
bulletDer Landesvater
bulletThe Land Father.
bulletWas kommt dort von Höhe
bulletWhat comes from afar.
bulletGaudeamus igitur
bulletTherefore let us rejoice.

We have included Gaudeamus Igitur on this page. It is internationally famous and is a rousing example of student high spirits. It must have been a wow when first heard at his graduation ceremony in Breslau. You must get the complete overture out of the library! In the meantime - raise your glasses with Johannes and enjoy our MusicSmiles arrangement of his genius in this majestic masterpiece . . .
