The Worlds of Gilbert and Sullivan

Arthur Sullivan wrote this passionate song for his first love Rosamond Barnett, at the age of seventeen. His love, however, was not reciprocated. The words, were by the little known Swiss poet Wilhelm August Corrodi (1826 - 1885). The loose English translation was done much later by an unrecorded lyricist¹. German language scholars' comments welcome on translation and pronunciation . . .

There were three of a well known English composer John Barnett's children at Leipzig at the same time as Arthur: Clara, Rosamond, and John Francis. The soprano Clara, who fell head over heels in love with Arthur was 'excited . . . with a strange emotion never before experienced . . . by this smiling youth with an oval, olive-tinted face, dark eyes, and a large generous mouth!' This sentiment was to be echoed during a further forty years of succeeding generations of young ladies! However, instead of Clara, Arthur fell for her sister, the contralto Rosamond, and the rest, as they, is history!

The song is dated 3 December 1859, and must rate as one of Arthur's earliest published songs.
