Emil Waldteufel (pronounced Valtoyfle) was born in Strasburg in 1837, and died in Paris in 1915. This French (Alsation) pianist and composer studied in the Paris Conservatoire and became Court Pianist, and director of the Court Balls from 1865. He achieved great success in composing over 250 dances, particularly waltzes, including - Espana, Estudiantina, and Les Patineurs (The Skaters). The Skaters Waltz, which we have included on this page, is arguably one of the most famous waltzes ever written. Its popularity today is as great as ever. Did Emil influence Arthur Sullivan? What do you think? The imagery generated by Emil has been exploited by lots of people (including skaters!), and we hope you will also be moved by it . . .! And now for a visit to a Piano Concert! . . .
