John Goss was born in Fareham in 1800 and died in Brixton in 1880. One of Arthur's teachers at the Royal Academy of Music, he was also organist at St Paul's Cathedral, London, and a composer of no mean ability. He was knighted in 1872.

Sir John was a great champion of Arthur Sullivan, encouraging him throughout his life, although always wanting him to concentrate on 'serious music', rather than the lighter operettas which so fascinated Arthur.
