In the show  a young and attractive girl, Rita, has been kidnapped on the eve of her wedding. Rita's fiancé, Count Vasquez, finds the smugglers' retreat and disguised as an old shepherd, is determined to rescue her. Vasquez, a tenor, sings this aubade1.

Wake, Gentle Maiden
Wait for interesting introduction!

Wake, Gentle Maiden,
See the light of Day,
Boldly from the mountain
Drives the shade away:
Maiden wake, maiden wake.
See the mists of morning
Routed by the day,
Haste away, haste away - - -
See the mists of morning
Routed by the day,
See the mists of morning
Routed by the day,
Haste away, haste away,
Haste away!

Wait for interesting interlude!

Wake, Gentle Maiden,
Bid the shadows flee,
Brighter than the sunlight
Is thy smile to me:
Maiden wake, maiden, wake.
Sweet, thy smile as sunlight,
Chasing night away:
Wake, 'tis day, Wake, 'tis day - - -
Sweet, thy smile is sunlight,
Chasing night away:
Sweet, thy smile is sunlight,
Chasing night away:
Wake, 'tis day, Wake, 'tis day,
Wake, 'tis day!

Doesn't it encourage you to put your best foot forward? Don't feel bashful, give it a twirl! Can't you sense the sunrise, almost hear the sound of the castanets? Have a go with our arrangement of Arthur and Francis' wonderful morning song . . .

1.    Footnote: Aubade (pronounced obard) means early morning music. It derives from the French - Aube, and Provençal - Alba, dawn. It is the counterpart of nocturne or serenade - meaning evening music.

Let us now continue our Spring sequence with the beautiful Fauré's Requiem
